The magic of outsourcing

I read an interesting Accountancy Age article before Christmas about how two-thirds of accountants are set to outsource services to remain competitive. Ignoring the author’s potential bias, this still strikes me as quite a change for the market.

I am an independent technical expert in my field and I have to say that collaborating with a Top-20 accountancy firm to deliver excellence to their clients has worked really well for us all. The client gets reassurances and a joined-up service by working with its accountancy firm as well as deep technical expertise that really only comes from working day in day out in a very narrow field of tax (for too many years to count).

For me personally, collaborating to bring more overall client value feels inspiring and energising. And nice to give first-hand ‘on the job’ learning opportunities for the firm’s trainees too. A true win:win.

And so perhaps the days of large firms employing rafts of specialists will become a thing of the past. Particularly given the desire for autonomy and flexible working that I see in graduates today.

And so why might you want to outsource?

In a nutshell:

  1. Your clients get top-notch expertise that they will thank you for
  2. Happy clients are likely to stay with you
  3. Bringing opportunities to your clients ensures that you are fulfilling your role and protects against competitors finding an easy way in
  4. Great learning experience for your team
  5. Attractive overall value proposition
